The Federal Government has secured the release of 98 containers of electricity transmission equipment that had been stranded at Nigerian ports for nearly 20 years.

The release, approved by the Nigeria Customs Service, is expected to support efforts to expand the national grid, complete abandoned projects and ease pressure on overloaded electricity substations.

The equipment was originally procured to strengthen the transmission network and improve electricity supply across the country.

According to the Ministry of Power, engineers from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) will inspect, test and verify the equipment before deploying it to locations where it is most needed.

The ministry said the deployment would help complete stalled projects, improve the capacity of overloaded substations and strengthen the country’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

It described the release as a significant first step, adding that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of more than 200 remaining containers without further delay.

The ministry expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving the release, as well as the Comptroller-General and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service.

It also acknowledged the contributions of the Ministers of Finance and Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Ports Authority, terminal operators and the TCN team in facilitating the process.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to address transmission constraints and improve the reliability of electricity supply nationwide.
