The Zamfara State House of Assembly has backed constitutional amendments to pave the way for the establishment of state police, saying the move will strengthen efforts to tackle insecurity and protect vulnerable communities and travellers.
The Assembly passed a resolution supporting the proposed constitutional alterations during its sitting, with Speaker Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki saying state police would complement the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Dauda Lawal to address insecurity and other criminal activities.
Speaking to journalists in Gusau, Moriki said the Zamfara Government was prepared to provide the necessary framework for the effective operation of state police if established.
“During our sitting, we passed the State Police Bill and we are sure that if established, it will help us in addressing the insecurity we have been battling with for many years,” Moriki said.
The Speaker said Governor Lawal remained committed to restoring peace and security in the state and would support the initiative.
“Our Governor Dauda is committed to a peaceful Zamfara. That is why he assured of his total support to see this new development see the light of the day,” he said.
Moriki said state police would also help protect communities facing attacks and improve security on highways where travellers have been exposed to criminal activities.
He said the initiative would “go a long way in liberating communities experiencing attacks” while providing greater safety for travellers, particularly along troubled highways.
The move comes amid renewed efforts to amend Nigeria’s constitutional framework to allow the establishment of state police, with proponents arguing that a decentralised policing system would improve intelligence gathering, response time and community-based security.
