Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has accused some individuals in the country of taking advantage of Nigeria’s worsening security situation for political gains.
Yusuf made the allegation on Tuesday in Lagos at a national conference organised by the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), themed “Building a Fractured Nation.”
The governor was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Transportation, Haruna Isa Dederi.
He said Nigeria is currently facing serious security challenges that require the joint efforts of both government and the citizens, stressing that security should not be left to government alone.
“There are grave security challenges confronting our nation, and addressing them requires collective responsibility between the government and the people,” Yusuf said.
He expressed concern that some individuals are deliberately exploiting the situation for political advantage.
“Regrettably, there are unpatriotic individuals who exploit these challenges for political gain, thereby undermining collective efforts, especially those of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to combat the escalating threat of insecurity,” he added.
The governor also noted that Kano State, being the most populous in the country, continues to face its own security concerns, including gang rivalry and phone snatching.
He said the state government has been working to strengthen local security structures in response to emerging threats.
According to him, recent bandit attacks in Tsanyawa, Shanono, and Ghari Local Government Areas, which he said spread from neighbouring Katsina State, prompted swift action from his administration.
“In response, my administration has taken swift and decisive action against this security threat,” he said.
Yusuf added that the state government is working closely with security agencies, including the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and other national security bodies, to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and related crimes.
