A highly intense debate recently broke out on the floor of the Nigerian Senate regarding the proper allocation and management of government funds.
The heated argument occurred as federal lawmakers considered the second reading of the controversial Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill, 2025.
The proposed legislation, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, seeks to drastically increase the statutory allocation to the police fund from 0.5 percent to 1 percent of the total revenue accruing to the Federation Account.
However, the proposal immediately triggered a massive wave of concern among several lawmakers, leading to a direct confrontation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Abdul Ningi.
Senator Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, strongly cautioned the upper chamber that increasing statutory deductions could significantly shrink the Federation Account.
The outspoken lawmaker warned that such cumulative allocations might drastically reduce the funds available for sharing among the federal, state, and local governments.
Ningi also raised serious concerns regarding strict accountability and transparency in the utilization of the proposed funds by the security agencies.
Responding to the concerns, Senate President Godswill Akpabio quickly countered the arguments, firmly assuring the lawmakers that the National Assembly would ensure strict financial discipline.
Akpabio maintained that the legislative body remains fully committed to blocking any financial loopholes and preventing the unauthorized disbursement of public resources.
”I will not allow illegal sharing of money,” Akpabio reportedly declared while defending the integrity of the proposed legislative amendments.
The Senate President further assured his colleagues that priority must be placed on the absolute accountability of the fund once it is officially established.
Following the intense debate, the Senate President officially referred the bill to the Committee on Police Affairs for further legislative inputs and thorough public scrutiny.
Political observers continue to closely monitor the ongoing friction between the two prominent lawmakers, recalling their previous disputes over the alleged padding of the national budget.
