The Federal Government has released eight months salary arrears to members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, less than 48 hours after the union issued a 14-day ultimatum.

SSANU had, in a communique after its 56th National Executive Council meeting at the University of Uyo, demanded full payment of outstanding Consolidated University Academic salary arrears from January 2026.

Also demanded is the payment of two months salaries withheld during the 2022 strike, and one-year arrears from the 25 and 35 percent salary increases.

The union warned it would resume a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike if government failed to act.

Confirming the release, SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, commended the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, for what he described as swift and proactive intervention.

He said the Minister had contacted the union leadership to confirm that the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General were processing the funds.

Ibrahim urged members across branches to liaise with university managements to ensure prompt payment and report any shortfall.

While welcoming the payment, SSANU insists government must still settle the two months withheld salaries from 2022 and the one-year arrears from the salary increment, describing them as legitimate entitlements.

The union also called on state governments and governing councils of state-owned universities to ensure full and equitable implementation of the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement to avoid unrest.
