Social media platform X said on Tuesday it had challenged a Turkish court order requiring it to restrict access within Türkiye to the official Presidential Candidacy Office account of the detained Mayor of Istanbul, saying it disagreed with the decision but was compelled to comply under local law.

In a statement published by its Global Government Affairs account, X said the order required the platform to block access to the account only in Türkiye, while leaving it accessible elsewhere in the world.

The company said failure to comply with the order could have resulted in severe sanctions, including the throttling of the entire platform in Türkiye.

“Although Türkiye’s laws force us to comply with the order, we are challenging the order in court,” X said, adding that it had also made the court order public “in the spirit of full transparency”.

The company said the latest restriction follows a similar court order issued in May 2025, which blocked access in Türkiye to another account belonging to the Istanbul mayor. X said it also challenged that order in court and that the case remains pending before Türkiye’s Constitutional Court.

X said it would continue to contest content removal and access restriction orders that it believes are inconsistent with freedom of expression, due process or applicable local laws.

The latest order was issued by the Istanbul 8th Criminal Judgeship of Peace under case number 2026/6804.
