Jeetu Munda, a resident of Keonjhar district, had been trying unsuccessfully to withdraw approximately KSh 31,400 from his sister’s bank account following her death on January 26. Despite making several visits to the bank, he was repeatedly turned away due to a lack of essential documents, including a death certificate and proof that he was the legal heir.
For Jeetu, who is illiterate and unfamiliar with formal banking procedures, meeting these requirements proved extremely difficult. He reportedly tried to explain that his sister had already been buried, but without official documentation, his requests were denied each time.
