The Oyo State Police Command has denied allegations of unlawful detention of singer, Afunso Ridwan Abiola (a.k.a. Rolex Dee) by its Anti-Cultism Squad.
This was contained in a Wednesday statement signed by the command’s spokesman, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade.
Ayanlade said the Office of the Commissioner of Police had received a criminal complaint in respect of a case of cyberbullying, defamation of character, and threat to life against Rolex Dee, following which an investigation was initiated to ascertain the facts surrounding the allegations.
He said the complaint was filed by popular Fuji musician, Adebisi Taye Akande (a.k.a. Taye Currency).
According to the police, Taye Currency accused Rolex Dee of cyberbullying and defaming him across multiple social media platforms.
It was further alleged that the suspect, having previously received financial assistance to the tune of ₦800,000 from the complainant for the promotion of his music career, resorted to making disparaging and damaging statements capable of injuring the reputation of the complainant.
The statement reads, “In addition, the suspect was alleged to have made further defamatory utterances during a public programme known as Agbaletu, which subsequently gained widespread circulation on social media, thereby aggravating the impact of the alleged misconduct.
“Consequent upon diligent investigation and technical intelligence, the suspect was tracked and apprehended in Lagos State by operatives of the command and has since been brought into custody for further investigation.”
The command said its attention has, however, been drawn to reports circulating on certain online platforms alleging unlawful detention of the suspect by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit, describing the reports as “misleading and unfounded”.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the suspect is being held in lawful custody, and all procedures undertaken so far strictly comply with extant laws and established protocols.
“The command remains committed to ensuring due process, fairness, and the protection of the fundamental rights of all parties involved.
“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard sensational and unverified reports capable of misleading the public and causing unnecessary apprehension.
“The command encourages responsible reportage and urges media platforms to verify facts before dissemination,” the statement further reads.
The command reiterated its unwavering commitment to professionalism, justice, and the protection of the rights and reputations of all citizens.
