President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 25th anniversary as head of government, describing the milestone as a rare achievement in a democracy.
Tinubu, in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, said Modi’s 25 years of public service reflected the “enduring confidence” placed in him by the Indian people.
The President noted that October 7 marked 25 years since Modi first assumed office in 2001 as Head of Government and Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Modi served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister for more than 12 years before becoming Prime Minister of India in 2014.
“A quarter-century of unbroken leadership is a rare achievement in any democracy,” Tinubu said.

He added that in India, “the world’s most populous nation,” Modi’s longevity in public office was “a powerful testament to the enduring confidence the Indian people have placed in him.”
Tinubu said Modi had demonstrated “vision and an unwavering commitment to development” over the past 25 years, citing his leadership in infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion and innovation.
According to him, Modi’s leadership contributed to Gujarat’s transformation and India’s emergence as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies.
“His leadership in infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion and innovation has lifted millions and inspired nations across the Global South,” Tinubu said.
The President also highlighted the strategic relationship between Nigeria and India, recalling Modi’s State Visit to Abuja in November 2024, during which Nigeria honoured him with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Tinubu said the visit “gave fresh impetus” to cooperation between both countries in trade and investment, energy, defence and security, health, education and technology.
He described Nigeria and India as “fellow democracies and leading voices of the Global South” with a shared commitment to a fairer, more inclusive and representative international order.
Tinubu expressed confidence that the relationship between both countries would continue to deepen under Modi’s leadership.
“I remain confident that, under his continued leadership, the bonds of friendship between our peoples will grow ever stronger,” he said.
