The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the abduction of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members along their route to orientation camps, calling for an urgent and transparent investigation into the incident.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS said the two buses conveying the corps members were reportedly travelling in convoy when they reached the location of the incident. According to the association, one of the drivers allegedly stopped, claiming he wanted to give money to someone on the other side of the road, prompting the second bus to stop alongside it, after which armed men reportedly emerged from the bush and abducted the corps members.
NANS said it was particularly concerned by reports that neither of the two drivers was abducted, while the kidnappers were allegedly already positioned around the location where the buses stopped.
“These circumstances raise serious questions that require urgent and transparent investigation,” the association said.
It stressed that it was not in a position to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident or attribute responsibility to any individual or transport company, but maintained that the questions arising from the incident could not be ignored.
NANS therefore called on relevant security agencies and government authorities to urgently investigate the operations of UDUA KING Transport Service in connection with the incident.
The association further urged the authorities, where necessary, to suspend the transport company’s operations pending the conclusion of the investigation to establish exactly what transpired.

“As a precautionary measure, we advise students and other travelers to exercise extreme caution and, pending clarification of the circumstances surrounding this incident, consider avoiding UDUA KING Transport Service,” NANS said.
The students’ body said it was particularly concerned about the safety of Nigerian students and young people who travel across the country daily.
“The circumstances surrounding this incident must be thoroughly investigated, and anyone found to have compromised the safety of the victims must be held accountable,” it said.
NANS added that the families of the victims, the NYSC community and Nigerians deserved a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
“There are many questions requiring answers, and we believe the families of the victims, the NYSC community and Nigerians deserve nothing less than a transparent investigation,” the association said.
“The safety of Nigerian students remains our priority.”
The statement was signed by Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, National President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
