Ethiopia’s parliament has reelected Abiy Ahmed as prime minister following the ruling Prosperity Party’s landslide victory in the June general election.
The reappointment was announced on Monday during a televised parliamentary session by the newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Ahmed Shide.
“Abiy Ahmed is hereby appointed as the prime minister of Ethiopia,” Shide declared.
Ahmed subsequently took the oath of office at a ceremony attended by President Taye Atske Selassie and other senior government officials, formally commencing his new five-year term.

His reappointment followed the Prosperity Party’s decisive performance in the election, in which it secured 438 of the 547 seats in parliament.
The development comes as Ahmed’s government faces renewed security challenges, including fresh clashes with the newly formed Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, which is seeking to overthrow the government.
