Anambra CP To Sanction DPO, Officers After Suspect ‘Disappeared’ From Custody

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered disciplinary action against officers linked to the alleged disappearance of an armed robbery suspect from the 3-3 Police Station.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the Commissioner ordered the station’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to explain their roles in the incident.

Ama also directed disciplinary proceedings against an Inspector of Police involved in the matter.

The directives followed a viral video alleging that an armed robbery suspect arrested and taken to the station could no longer be accounted for.

Ikenga said the Commissioner issued the orders on Monday, October 5, after personally interviewing the complainant and police officers connected to the case.

Ama described the allegation as serious, saying incidents capable of undermining public confidence in the police would not be treated lightly.

He directed the Command’s X-Squad to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the suspect’s arrest, detention and documentation, as well as establish what happened after he was brought to the station.

The probe will also determine the roles of the officers involved and establish the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s disappearance.

The Commissioner ordered additional operational measures to facilitate the suspect’s arrest and assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made known once the facts had been established.

He also cautioned members of the public against circulating unverified information that could interfere with the investigation.

Ama said accountability remained central to his leadership of the Command, stressing that no officer would be exempt from scrutiny or the established disciplinary process.
