Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has pledged to clear the 11-month salary arrears owed teachers under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

Alia said the government would begin adding one month’s arrears to teachers’ monthly salaries until the outstanding backlog is fully cleared.

The governor made the pledge in Makurdi during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration at IBB Square.

He was represented at the event by his deputy, Sam Ode.

Alia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising education and improving the welfare and working conditions of teachers in the state.

He said the government had implemented the harmonised retirement age for teachers and introduced an automated payroll system to reduce leakages and improve accountability.

The governor also said his administration had recruited more than 9,000 teachers, constructed and renovated over 400 classrooms, provided furniture and introduced professional development and retraining programmes for teachers and learners.

He commended teachers for their dedication to shaping the future of children in Benue State and praised the SUBEB Executive Chairman, Dr Grace Adagba, for her efforts to reform basic education.

The Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Margaret Adamu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Basic Education, Mrs Bibiana Tyoishi, also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

The celebration, organised under the 2026 Nigeria Union of Teachers theme, “Standing with Teachers, 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Future,” featured a march-past, entertainment, presentations and speeches.

The NUT also endorsed Governor Alia for a second term, citing his administration’s efforts towards peace, development and progress in the state.
