More than 41 trainees have graduated from the Batch C Skill Acquisition Programme of the Esther Matthew Tonlagha Foundation, receiving vocational training and financial support aimed at promoting self-reliance and community development.
The beneficiaries were trained in various income-generating skills, including fashion design, culinary arts, baking, salon services, as well as makeup and gele styling, areas considered vital for entrepreneurship and grassroots job creation
Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Effurun, the founder, Esther Tonlagha, said the initiative was designed to equip women and vulnerable individuals with practical skills needed to transform their lives.
According to her, the programme goes beyond awarding certificates by providing participants with tools for economic independence and the capacity to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
In a major boost, she announced a grant of N1 million for each of the 41 graduates as start-up capital to support their transition into business and independent practice.
“This is not just a celebration of completion, but a recognition of courage, growth and transformation,” she said, urging the beneficiaries to remain focused and resilient.
She emphasised that the true impact of the programme would be measured by how the graduates apply their skills to build sustainable livelihoods, support others, and contribute to community development.
She also appreciated partners who have supported the foundation’s initiatives across the Niger Delta, noting that their collaboration has been instrumental in driving lasting impact.
Observers say such programmes are critical in tackling unemployment and social vulnerability, particularly among women and young people, while strengthening grassroots capacity.
The foundation reaffirmed its commitment to continued mentorship and support for the beneficiaries, describing the graduation as the beginning of a broader journey of empowerment.
In addition to the cash grants, the graduates were provided with starter packs including makeup kits, hairdressing tools, baking equipment, generators, and deep freezers to support their businesses.
