An official from the United Arab Emirates has said the country is reassessing its role in multilateral organisations, following its decision to withdraw from OPEC.
Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, the official said Abu Dhabi is reviewing the value of its memberships but is not currently considering additional withdrawals.
The remarks come amid speculation that the UAE could reconsider its participation in regional bodies such as the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council after announcing it will leave OPEC and the OPEC+ from 1st May.
Senior Emirati official Anwar Gargash criticised the performance of regional organisations during a forum earlier this week, saying political and military coordination among Gulf states had been “the weakest in history”.
He added that while he had expected a limited response from the Arab League, he was surprised by what he described as the weak stance of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
In a post on X earlier in April, Gargash said the UAE would “carefully” review its regional and international relationships to determine future strategic partnerships.
