According to report by Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, fresh cracks are beginning to surface within the ruling All Progressives Congress as internal disagreements over governorship and senatorial tickets ahead of the 2027 elections threaten party unity across several states.
Investigations indicate that the party’s push for consensus candidates is generating tension in at least 10 state chapters, with disputes already boiling over in states such as Oyo State, Nasarawa State, Kano State, Benue State, Delta State and Rivers State.
Party insiders say efforts to impose preferred candidates are creating deep divisions among stakeholders.
In Oyo, the governorship ambition of Bayo Adelabu has complicated succession plans. While some members are backing Sharafadeen Alli, supporters of Teslim Folarin insist no endorsement has come from Bola Tinubu.
This has sparked calls for direct primaries. Folarin’s loyalists argue his stronger performance in the 2023 election gives him an edge over Adelabu.
In Nasarawa, Governor Abdullahi Sule’s endorsement of Aliyu Wadada has been rejected by some aspirants, including former police chief Mohammed Adamu, who insists that only direct primaries can ensure fairness.
Kano’s APC chapter is also grappling with internal rivalry despite agreement over Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a likely candidate.
The dispute centres on the deputy governorship slot and control of party structures, with camps loyal to Abdullahi Ganduje and Barau Jibrin locked in disagreement.
In Benue, the long-running feud between Governor Hyacinth Alia and SGF George Akume continues to unsettle the party.
Delta presents another flashpoint, as the political realignment involving Governor Sheriff Oborevwori threatens the ambitions of figures like Ned Nwoko and Ifeanyi Okowa.
Meanwhile, Rivers remains perhaps the most volatile chapter, with Nyesom Wike’s influence shaping power struggles involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Across these states, many party members believe only direct intervention from President Tinubu can prevent these tensions from escalating into a major crisis before 2027.
