The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly impersonating a renowned cleric on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public of more than ₦18 million.

The suspect, who the police described as the son of a prophet, was arrested by operatives of the Ilaro Division following a complaint lodged on October 3, 2026, by Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun.

According to a statement by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, Akogun reported that members of the public had complained about fraudulent activities being carried out in his name through a duplicated Facebook profile.

“The arrest followed a report lodged on 3 October 2026 by one Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun,” who alerted the police that members of the public had been complaining about fraudulent activities being perpetrated in his name through a duplicated Facebook profile”, the statement reads.

Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, Ilaro Division, deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track the suspect.

The police said sustained technological monitoring and intelligence-led analysis led to Arojah’s arrest in a nearby village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating Prophet Akogun on Facebook, using the cleric’s identity to make fake prophecies and offer prayer services to vulnerable individuals.

The police said the suspect targeted people seeking spiritual assistance through the prophet’s Facebook page, gained their trust and defrauded victims both in Nigeria and abroad.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect systematically targeted victims seeking spiritual assistance on the said prophet’s Facebook page, gains their trust and swindled them of funds amounting to over ₦18 million,” the statement said.

The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

The police said the investigation would focus on determining the extent of the alleged crime, identifying possible accomplices and ensuring possible prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro operatives for their vigilance, tactical discipline and swift response.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting residents from digital and physical threats.

The command also urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging with religious leaders and public figures on social media.
