A Nigerian lady has criticised citizens living abroad who took to the streets to celebrate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day, saying they appeared disconnected from the harsh realities many Nigerians face at home.
In a video making the rounds online, the lady questioned the decision by some Nigerians in the diaspora to hold elaborate celebrations while serious security challenges continue to affect people across the country.
According to her, Nigerians living abroad should be more sensitive to the situation on the ground and understand that Independence Day celebrations may feel different to those dealing with insecurity and other difficulties in the country.
She said she became particularly upset after watching videos of Nigerians abroad marching and celebrating Nigeria’s independence.
“Some Nigerians abroad need to learn how to read the room. Some of you don’t understand what Nigerians back home are going through. Did you people think you love Nigeria more than those of us in Nigeria?
“I got so angry watching videos of Nigerians abroad celebrating Independence Day, because on that same day, 20 NYSC members were kidnapped,” she said.
Her comments have sparked reactions online, with Nigerians sharing different views about whether celebrating the country from abroad is inappropriate amid the challenges confronting citizens at home.
