onvicted murderer Christa Pike has regained consciousness in hospital nearly a week after surviving a failed execution by lethal injection in Tennessee.

Pike, 50, had been scheduled for execution on September 30 over the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, but she remained alive after prison officials administered two doses of pentobarbital. She was subsequently taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.

Speaking after a court hearing on Wednesday, one of Pike’s lawyers, Randy Spivey, revealed that she had regained consciousness and was able to speak.

According to Spivey, her first words after waking were: “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”

He also said Pike was “angry and confused” about what had happened.

Her legal team had previously feared that she had suffered severe brain damage and might not survive. Spivey said they had believed she was brain dead and expected life support to be withdrawn before she unexpectedly began speaking again.

Pike remains in intensive care and is battling several serious health complications, including pneumonia, a blood clot and severe swelling in both arms. She is also reportedly unable to swallow properly and has limited movement.

Her lawyers say she had cooperated with prison officials before the execution and even helped them locate a suitable vein. However, after the lethal drugs were administered, the procedure failed to kill her.

Pike’s survival has been described by the Death Penalty Information Center as the first known case in the United States of a death row prisoner surviving after being injected with lethal doses of execution drugs.

A Tennessee judge has now ordered state officials to preserve evidence connected to the failed execution, including medical equipment and other materials used during the procedure.

Meanwhile, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has suspended executions in the state for the rest of 2026 and ordered an independent review of the incident. The commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction has also announced his resignation following the failed execution.
