US President Donald Trump has said he believes the ongoing war with Iran could end “pretty soon”, expressing confidence that diplomatic efforts may soon replace military action. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said he did not expect the fighting to continue for much longer, while also acknowledging that the US military is facing tighter supplies of some types of munitions after months of conflict.
“I think it’s going to end pretty soon. I don’t think they can go much longer,” Trump said, referring to Iran. His remarks come at a time when Washington is trying to push for a broader agreement with Tehran while keeping military options on hold.
Trump revealed that the United States had paused planned military strikes against Iran following requests from Iran and several countries in the Middle East. According to him, the move is aimed at creating space for negotiations that could lead to a wider agreement between the two sides.
Why did the US pause planned strikes on Iran?
Trump said the decision to suspend military action came after signs of progress in talks with Iran. Earlier this week, he disclosed that Washington had agreed to cancel planned strikes because discussions were moving in a positive direction.
He claimed that the proposed framework includes the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and steps to address concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would ensure the “Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT” and remove what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat. However, he added that the pause in military action would continue only if a final agreement is reached quickly.
What did Trump say about US weapons stockpiles?
Responding to questions about America’s military readiness, Trump said the US still has virtually unlimited supplies of some powerful weapons but admitted that stocks of certain munitions are tighter than usual.
He also said US defence manufacturers are increasing production capacity, including the construction of new facilities to produce Patriot and Tomahawk missiles, to strengthen the country’s military preparedness.
Can diplomacy end the US-Iran war?
The latest developments follow months of military escalation between Washington and Tehran. A ceasefire brokered earlier this year eventually collapsed after both sides accused each other of violating the agreement, leading to renewed clashes around the Strait of Hormuz and fresh US strikes on Iranian military targets.
