Why Elon Musk wanted to buy Russian nuclear missiles before founding SpaceX; Billionaire reveals surprising Mars mission plan

Before founding SpaceX, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk explored an unusual idea to make space travel more affordable. Musk revealed that around 2001 and 2002, he travelled to Moscow and held discussions with Russian military officials to buy retired intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). He clarified that the missiles were never intended for military use. Instead, his goal was to convert them into rockets that could one day help humans reach Mars.

Musk says the plan was for space exploration, not warfare

Musk explained that Russia was reducing its stockpile of nuclear missiles under arms reduction agreements, which meant several ICBMs were being retired. He believed these missiles could be repurposed for peaceful space missions after removing their nuclear components and adding an extra upper stage.

According to Musk, buying existing missiles appeared to be a faster and more affordable option than designing completely new rockets from scratch. At that time, he had not yet started SpaceX and was looking for practical ways to turn his dream of space exploration into reality.

He stressed that the idea had nothing to do with weapons or military operations. His only objective was to obtain reliable rocket technology that could eventually support ambitious missions, including sending humans to Mars.

Moscow meetings ended without a deal

Musk described his meetings with Russian military officials in Moscow as “trippy” and unlike anything he had experienced before. He said negotiating with senior military commanders over missile purchases felt surreal.

However, the discussions failed to produce an agreement. Musk recalled that instead of lowering the asking price during negotiations, Russian officials kept increasing it, making the proposed deal financially unrealistic.

Apart from the high price, other factors also prevented the transaction from moving forward. After the talks collapsed, Musk decided that instead of depending on old military technology, he would build rockets himself.

Failed attempt eventually led to the birth of SpaceX

The unsuccessful negotiations became a turning point in Musk’s career. After failing to acquire Russian missiles, he decided to establish SpaceX and focus on developing affordable and reusable rockets.

Over the years, SpaceX has transformed the global space industry with reusable launch vehicles, the Starship programme and satellite internet services. The company continues to pursue Musk’s long-term vision of making human life multiplanetary through future Mars missions.

Musk has often said that reducing the cost of space travel is essential if humans are to explore and settle other planets. Looking back, he believes the failed missile deal ultimately pushed him toward building a company capable of creating its own launch systems.

Security concerns and the larger lesson

Although Musk insisted there was never any intention to use the missiles as weapons, the idea naturally raises questions about international security and regulations surrounding military technology.

The episode also highlights how unusual ideas can sometimes lead to groundbreaking innovation. What began as an unsuccessful attempt to purchase retired missiles eventually inspired Musk to develop his own aerospace company.

Today, SpaceX is one of the world’s leading private space companies, regularly launching rockets and preparing for future deep-space missions. Musk’s revelation offers a glimpse into the bold thinking and determination that shaped the company’s early journey, showing how a failed plan eventually became the foundation for one of the biggest success stories in modern space exploration.
