Rising electricity bills, unemployment and…: 4 key reasons why protests are escalating in PoK, what are protesters’ main demands?

Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is witnessing fresh protests as public anger over rising prices, unemployment and political grievances continues to grow. Demonstrators say they are struggling with soaring electricity bills, expensive food and a lack of jobs, while also accusing authorities of political discrimination and suppressing civil rights. The unrest has intensified after recent local body elections, with protesters alleging irregularities and demanding reforms.

Why are protests growing in PoK?

The demonstrations are being led mainly by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a coalition of civil society groups, traders and students. Protesters claim that ordinary residents are facing severe economic hardship while receiving limited political representation. Clashes between demonstrators and Pakistani security forces have further escalated tensions, leaving the region on edge.

Key reasons behind the protests

  • Rising cost of living: Protesters are demanding lower electricity tariffs, affordable wheat and flour, and relief from inflation.
  • Unemployment: Young people say job opportunities are scarce due to limited investment and industries.
  • Election controversy: Allegations of irregularities in the July 27 local body polls have increased political tensions.
  • Reserved seats dispute: Protesters oppose the continuation of 12 refugee-reserved seats in the PoK Assembly, alleging they influence political outcomes.

Security crackdown and international concerns

Protest leaders allege that security forces have used excessive force to disperse demonstrations. Reports claim that more than 40 people have died in the unrest and many others have been injured. Authorities have reportedly restricted internet and communication services, while JAAC has been declared a banned organisation under anti-terror laws.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has criticised Pakistan’s handling of the situation, describing the unrest as a result of long-standing governance and human rights concerns in PoK. Separately, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for an independent and impartial investigation into reports of extrajudicial killings and police violence.

What could happen next?

Analysts believe the protests may continue if inflation, unemployment and governance issues remain unresolved. They say meaningful dialogue with civil society groups, economic relief measures and administrative reforms could help reduce tensions, while continued confrontation may deepen instability across the region.
