A herder and 11 cows have died following a road accident involving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle along the East-West Road at Evekwu in Rumuodogu, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to a report by The Nation, the incident occurred on Thursday when a herd of cattle was attempting to cross the highway and the speeding vehicle collided with the animals and their handlers.

The crash reportedly left 11 cows dead, while one herder lost his life. Another cattle rearer sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.

Witnesses said the occupants of the Mercedes-Benz abandoned the wrecked vehicle shortly after the accident, boarded another vehicle in a convoy and fled the scene before security operatives arrived.

A video circulating on social media showed the carcasses of several cows scattered in nearby bushes, with some people gathered around one of the dead animals.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, said investigations had commenced.

“Yes, I can confirm the incident. One of them died. The other was injured and was rushed to the hospital. He is now stable.

“However, before our men got to the scene, the owner of the Mercedes-Benz ran away.

“The corpse of the victim was taken away by his people, but the injured cattle rearer is responding to treatment in the hospital. Investigation is ongoing,” Agabe said.
