Earthquake today: A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday, triggering tsunami warnings and emergency alerts across several prefectures.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake’s epicentre was located beneath the sea at a depth of around 10 kilometres.
Tsunami Warning Issued
Following the strong tremor, authorities issued a tsunami warning for parts of the southern coastline. Waves of up to one metre (3.28 feet) are expected to reach affected coastal areas.
Officials have advised residents living near the coast to leave low-lying areas immediately and move to higher ground. People have also been asked to follow evacuation instructions issued by local authorities.
