In an incident eerily similar to those depicted in Bollywood blockbuster ‘Dhurandhar’, Zubair Baloch, brother of Karachi gangster Uzair Baloch, was shot at by motorcycle-borne gunmen outside his home in Karachi’s Lyari town Thursday evening.
Zubair Baloch shot in Lyari
According to Pakistani media reports, Zubair sustained bullet injuries in his chest and abdomen and was rushed to the city’s civil hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. Two passersby were also injured in the attack, Dawn reported.
As per the reports, the masked attackers fired upon Zubair Baloch when he outside his home in Lyari town on Thursday evening. Karachi South DIG Syed Asad Raza said that Zubair had been arrested in several criminal cases since 2012, and was released in January 2025.
Gang-war returning to Lyari?
Pakistani media reports suggest gang rivalry may be behind the attack on Zubair Baloch, and that the infamous gang wars of Lyari may return with even more ferocity than before.
A local condition speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Dawn that Zubair Baloch had recently joined a political party, and that party flags had been erected in the area a few months earlier.
According to the activist, several members of the Lyari gang, who had fled Karachi to Dubai and Iran to escape police action, have returned, raising the risk of increased violence in the area.
Who is Uzair Baloch?
Uzair Baloch, a dreaded gangster currently lodged in a Pakistani jail, was once infamous as the right-hand man of Abdul Rehman alias Rehman Dakait, dubbed the “King of Lyari”.
After Rehman was killed in a police encounter, Uzair Baloch took over the reins of his criminal empire, but was later arrested, and is currently serving a prison sentence.
In April 2020, a Pakistani military court found Uzair guilty of espionage and sentenced him to 12 years in prison, and in March this year, the Anti-Terrorism Court rejected his bail pleas in seven different cases. Baloch and his associates are accused of attacking police officers in Karachi with weapons and explosives.
Notably, Uzair Baloch came to limelight recently due to Ranveer Singh-starrer spy thriller ‘Dhurandhar’, in which his character is played by Indian actor Danish Pandor.
