China’s C919 passenger plane: How Tibet landing may become serious threat to India at LAC?

Beijing: China has celebrated the successful landing of its first home-built passenger aircraft, the C919, at Lhasa Gonggar Airport in Tibet. The country says the aircraft is a big step for its aviation industry and will help compete with Boeing and Airbus.

However, defence experts believe the aircraft could also help China improve military transport near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India because of its ability to fly in high-altitude areas.

Why is the C919 important?

Flying in places like Tibet is not easy. The air is thinner at high altitudes, which makes it harder for aircraft engines to work and reduces the lift needed for take-off and landing.

To deal with these conditions, China has developed a special high-altitude version of the C919, known as the C919-600. It has a shorter body, a stronger engine, and an improved air pressure system, making it better suited for airports in Tibet.

Its successful landing shows that China can now operate large passenger aircraft in some of the world’s highest airports.

Faster movement of soldiers

The high-altitude C919 can quickly carry around 130 to 160 soldiers from major Chinese cities to airports near the LAC, including Lhasa, Nyingchi, and Ali Kunsha.

This could help China move troops much faster during an emergency.

Better supply during winter

Heavy snowfall often blocks roads in border areas. Since the C919 is designed to fly in high-altitude conditions, it could help carry soldiers, food, fuel, and other supplies throughout the year.

Better Military Aircraft in the Future

Experts also say the technology used to build the C919 could help China improve military transport aircraft such as the Y-20, making them more effective in mountain areas.

A new rival to Boeing and Airbus

China also hopes the C919 will reduce its dependence on Western aircraft makers.

The aircraft has already received more than 1,000 orders, and Tibet Airlines has ordered 40 high-altitude versions.

China plans to sell the aircraft to countries in Asia, Africa, and South America that have mountain airports but may not be able to afford planes made by Boeing or Airbus.

Western parts are still important

The aircraft’s engine is made by a joint company from the United States and France. Some of its electronic and safety systems also come from Western countries.

If new restrictions are imposed in the future, China could face problems in making or maintaining the aircraft.

No approval from US or Europe yet

The C919 has not yet received safety approval from aviation regulators in the United States or Europe. Because of this, it cannot operate freely in many international markets.

What does it mean for India?

The C919 is not a military aircraft, but experts say its high-altitude capability could improve China’s transport network near the India-China border.

India already uses aircraft such as the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J Super Hercules to carry troops and equipment to high-altitude areas.

Experts believe China’s latest aviation development is a reminder that India should continue to strengthen its own aerospace industry and improve transport and infrastructure in border regions to maintain a strong defence position along the LAC.
