In the footage, an officer is seen counting a sum of money, reportedly collected unlawfully from a motorist who was stopped along the Abule Ado/Alakija expressway.
The video has raised serious concerns about police corruption and abuse of power, with many Nigerians demanding justice and transparency.
The incident reportedly began when some members of the Nigeria Police Force stopped a motorist, who is said to be a friend of the person who shared the video.
The police officers accused him of carrying goods without a NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) number.
Instead of following proper procedures, the officers allegedly threatened the motorist with a demand for N500,000, warning that he would be taken to the station if he failed to pay.
The motorist couldn’t meet the demand immediately, and he was detained for nearly five hours. During this period, the officers reportedly collected N20,000 from him before releasing him.
The video, which has since gone viral, appears to substantiate accusations that some police officers are involved in extortion and abuse of authority.
Such incidents have been a recurring issue in Nigeria, with many citizens expressing frustration over police misconduct and lack of accountability.
The viral footage has reignited public outrage, prompting calls for thorough investigations into police conduct and the need for reforms within the force.
In response to the video, the Police Compliance Response Unit issued a statement acknowledging the complaint.
The CRU tweeted, “Your complaint is hereby acknowledged and investigation has been initiated. Your tracking number is #CRU624465, Thank you for contacting NPF-CRU.”
