The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Osun State, Dr. Najeem Salaam, has condemned the division among labour unions in the state, describing it as a result of growing political interference in workers’ affairs.
Salaam, in a statement issued on Friday by the Director-General of his campaign organisation, Segun Olanibi, said it was disturbing that workers marked this year’s Workers’ Day in separate factions.
He noted that the development signalled how partisan interests had crept into the labour movement, warning that such a trend undermines workers’ welfare and unity.
“Workers’ Day is a moment of solidarity, not separation. It is a day to reflect on the dignity of labour, the struggles of workers, and our shared commitment to a better future. To see workers divided along political lines is both unfortunate and unacceptable,” he said.
The ADC candidate accused the ruling Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress of fuelling and exploiting divisions within the labour movement for political gain.
According to him, such actions weaken the collective strength of workers and reduce their ability to demand accountability and improved welfare.
He, however, assured workers in the state that labour unions would be respected and protected from political interference under an ADC-led administration.
“My administration will restore unity within the labour movement by creating an enabling environment where workers can organise, engage and advocate freely, without fear or interference. We will prioritise workers’ welfare, ensure prompt payment of salaries and pensions, and establish a transparent and inclusive system of engagement with all labour bodies,” Salaam added.
He stressed that sustainable development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of division and distrust, noting that unity among workers remains essential for progress and social stability.
Salaam also urged workers across the state to resist attempts to divide them and remain committed to their collective pursuit of fairness, dignity and economic justice.
“Together, we are stronger. The future of Osun depends on our collective strength, not our divisions,” he said.
