Angry protesters have attacked operatives of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the arrest of a Nigerian man identified as Chidozie Wilson Okeke in Brooklyn, New York City.
The development was captured in a video posted on X by TMZ, a Los Angeles-based media company.
According to TMZ, chaos broke out in the street as ICE agents dragged a man out of a hospital in New York on Saturday night.
The report said, “ICE agents dragged a man out of a hospital in New York City Saturday night … all while chaos broke out in the streets outside due to a mob of livid protesters.”
Reacting to the development, ICE said a targeted enforcement operation in Brooklyn led to the arrest of Okeke, who has been previously arrested for assault and criminal drug possession.
The statement reads, “Last night, @ICEgov conducted a targeted enforcement operation in Brooklyn that resulted in the arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a criminal illegal alien from Nigeria with previous arrests for ASSAULT AND CRIMINAL DRUG POSSESSION.”
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Okeke refused to comply with lawful instructions to step out of his vehicle and allegedly used the vehicle in an attempt to hit operatives during the arrest.
The agency further alleged that the suspect became physically combative, attempting to punch and elbow officers, prompting them to apply what it described as the minimum force necessary to effect the arrest.
The statement added, “During his arrest, Okeke refused to comply with officers’ lawful commands to exit the vehicle and weaponised his vehicle to attempt to hit ICE officers. Okeke became physically combative, attempting to punch and elbow ICE officers. Our officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest.”
The statement further revealed that after his arrest, Okeke requested medical assistance, “so ICE officers escorted him to Wyckoff Heights Medical Centre for a medical evaluation.”
The authority also disclosed that Okeke remained non-compliant during the medical evaluation, throwing himself to the floor and screaming after the medical staff cleared him.
During the medical evaluation, ICE explained that a significant crowd of anti-ICE agitators gathered at the hospital and became violent.
“The protestors damaged several ICE vehicles and assaulted ICE officers, resulting in minor injuries to the officers. Assaulting law enforcement is a felony and a crime. Officers from the New York Police Department responded to the scene and arrested several rioters,” the statement concluded.
