The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced late on Thursday that it had attacked several US destroyers in response to what it described as a ceasefire violation, using ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles and drones carrying warheads.
In a statement, the IRGC navy command said the operation followed what it described as a US attack on an Iranian oil tanker near Jask port and the approach of US destroyers towards the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran said amounted to a breach of the ceasefire.
The statement said Iranian forces had launched “a very large and precise combined operation” using various anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles, along with kamikaze drones carrying high-explosive warheads, targeting US destroyers in the area.
It added that “intelligence observations indicate significant damage to the American enemy, and three enemy aggressor ships quickly fled the Strait of Hormuz area.”
Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that US forces had intercepted what it described as unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with strikes in self-defence while US Navy destroyers were transiting the Strait of Hormuz towards the Gulf of Oman on 7th May.
