Air defence systems were heard operating over Tehran late on Thursday night, according to Iran’s Tasnim and Fars news agencies, with no immediate explanation.
Tasnim, a semi-official news agency, reported that the sound of air defence systems being activated was heard in parts of Tehran, adding that it was not yet clear whether this was “related to a defence test or to counter possible reconnaissance drones.”
The agency later said air defence systems had been activated against small aircraft and unmanned reconnaissance drones detected in the airspace.
Earlier on Thursday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz claimed that war with Iran “could resume soon”, repeating recent remarks seen as part of efforts by Tel Aviv to push the United States towards restarting the conflict.
A week ago, Katz said Tel Aviv was “waiting for a green light” from Washington to resume the war.
On 8th April, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week truce. On 11th April, Pakistan hosted talks between the two sides, which ended without agreement. The truce was later extended at Pakistan’s request “until Tehran submits its proposal”, with no timeframe specified.
The United States and Israel launched a war on Iran on 28th February, leaving more than 3,000 people dead, before the truce was announced in the hope of reaching a deal to end the conflict.
