Human rights lawyer, Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, has raised concerns over the decision by China to build and donate a new headquarters for the ECOWAS.
Odinkalu made the statement on his verified X page while reacting to reports about the proposed project. He questioned the need for such a development, noting that ECOWAS already has an existing headquarters in Asokoro, Abuja.
He wondered why a foreign country would fund a new building when the current structure is still in use, and also raised similar concerns about China’s involvement in projects linked to the African Union.
The legal expert suggested that the move raises important questions about priorities and possible external influence.

“I still cannot understand why China has to #BuildAndDonate the HQ building of @ecowas_cedeao ( for $56.5m) or, indeed, of @_AfricanUnion. What exactly is wrong with the existing HQ building of #Ecowas in Asokoro?”
