Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reacted to the defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling for unity among opposition leaders across the country.
Obi described the development as an important moment in Nigeria’s political space.
He said it signals a growing effort by opposition figures to come together and strengthen democratic values ahead of future political engagements.
In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, Obi revealed that he was in Kano on Monday following an invitation from Kwankwaso.
According to him, the visit came at a time the former governor made his decision to align with the ADC, a move he believes could reshape opposition politics in Nigeria.
He spoke warmly about Kwankwaso, referring to him as a respected elder brother, while noting that the timing of both events reflects a shared commitment to national progress.
Obi used the opportunity to stress the need for unity among political actors outside the ruling party. He urged them to put aside personal and party differences for the sake of the country.
He said: “Yesterday, Monday 30th March, I returned to the North’s Commercial nerve centre, Kano, on the invitation of my dear elder brother, Senator, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso @KwankwasoRM, whose decision to join our party marks yet another significant step in the collective effort to rescue and rebuild our democracy and dear nation, Nigeria.
“As I have consistently maintained, this is the time for all opposition forces and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside their differences and work together in unity of purpose.
“We must move beyond the politics of division, ethnicity, religion, and region, and embrace the politics of competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to a better Nigeria.
“The task before us is not about winning elections alone; it is about rebuilding institutions, restoring confidence in governance, and securing a better future for our children.”
The former Anambra State governor emphasised that the focus should no longer be limited to electoral victories. He said the bigger goal is to rebuild trust in public institutions and deliver responsible leadership that meets the needs of Nigerians.
